Tomorrow, the city is celebrating the 533rd anniversary of it’s foundation PDF Print E-mail

Thousands of people will live through the magical night of San Juan on the walkway of Las Canteras by the fire and the music of Dover, Robert Ramírez  and The Amaroses at El concierto Tropical in the annexe of the plaza de la  Música.

Tomorrow, thousands of people will celebrate the night of San Juan all along the walkway of Las Canteras, a festival celebrating the 533rd anniversary of the foundation of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Another night of purification and rites will be celebrated in a natural setting with music and fire.

The concert Tropical Noche de San Juan will begin at 22:30 hours in the annexe of the plaza de la Música and will finish with the lighting of a bonfire around midnight. The winning band of the Facefestival 2016 ‘ Full & Down” will be performing followed by Canarian revelation of 2010, The Amaroses, winners of a previous edition of La Caja Sonora and participants in the Womad festival 2010. Canarian performers will include Dover a band which formed in Madrid and Robert Ramirez. The former will perform songs from their last album I Ka Kené, the seventh album of their musical career, as well as some of their most popular hits by Amparo Llanos (guitar and voice), Cristina Llanos (voice and guitar), Jesús Antúnez (drums) and Samuel Titos (bass). Robert Ramírez, one of the latest artists invited to the Tropical concert, will perform his main hits found in Sick of love and I’m a Lumber. There will also be folk and traditional music at the other side of the beach walkway. There will be a stage set in the plaza de Saulo Torón and performances by El Mejunje and Échalo Pa’lante and will begin at 22:30 hours

As of each year, there will be fireworks beginning at midnight lit at La Puntilla with 396 kg of explosive mass, which will last for 10 minutes, celebrating the birthday of the Gran Canarian capital.

Sporting Festivities

The day of festivities will take place the following day at Las Canteras beach with the Second Swim of the Festival of San Juan. Participants will begin at 13:00 hours and cross the thousand metres separating the Chica beach from La Puntilla in an event that marks the beginning of summer. To end festivities, there will be traditional fighting including stick fighting between 10:00 and 13:00 hours in workshops taking place on Las Canteras beach near the plaza de Saulo Torón. The championships of Canarian Traditional Techniques will close the ceremonies, taking place between 19:00 and 21:00 hours.
